Kiminoyamahoroshi Solanum xanthocarpum

Kiminoyamahoroshi Solanum xanthocarpum

Solanum xanthocarpum is a perennial plant found growing wild in vacant lots and roadsides throughout India. It has a spreading base with protruding thorns, and its young branches, leaves, and stems are covered with a dense array of small yellow thorns. The fruit is approximately 1.5-2 cm in diameter and spherical, with a yellow background and green stripes. It is one of the plants that has been widely used in Ayurveda since ancient times, primarily for its respiratory benefits.

Traditionally, it has been used to treat respiratory disorders such as colds, asthma, sore throat, and hoarseness, and a decoction of the roots has been used in combination with other herbal medicines (e.g., amla) to relieve coughs and acute bronchial tension. It is also said to be involved in reproduction and endocrine balance; the fruit is used to maintain male vitality, and the seeds are used to treat menstrual irregularities and discomfort.

In terms of ingredients, the fruit has been reported to contain glucoalkaloids (solanocarpine) and plant sterols (carpesterol, solanocarpidine) . Flavonoids (quercetin) , plant sterols , and trace amounts of isochlorogenic acid , neochlorogenic acid , and caffeine have also been detected in the dried fruit. Based on these ingredients, basic research and pharmacological tests suggest that the fruit may have anti-inflammatory , antioxidant , expectorant , bronchodilator , and antibacterial properties.
